a) Marion Maréchal, niece of National Rally [NR] de facto leader Marine Le Pen and a member of France’s Reconquête, says her party had been excluded from the alliance of the Right ahead of the country’s general elections on June 30.
“Jordan Bardella [RN President] informed me this afternoon of a change of position and the refusal of the RN of the very principle of an agreement,” she said on June 11.
According to Maréchal, RN wanted no “direct or indirect association with [Reconquête leader] Éric Zemmour”.
“This sudden and contradictory decision [after] our numerous exchanges and preparatory work does not live up to … the expectations of the French,” she added.
b) …..but the RN are prepared to look ‘leftwards’.
Eric Ciotti, President of the French centre-right party The Republicans, has been called on to resign after agreeing to an electoral alliance with the hard-right National Rally (RN) for the June 30 French legislative elections.
“I want my political family to move towards an alliance with the National Rally,” he said on June 11. Some members had already joined him, he added. The two parties held similar political positions, including on immigration.
Ciotti said he recognised that his centre-right party was “too weak to oppose … [French President Emmanuel] Macron’s bloc and the left-wing bloc”. An alliance with RN was a way to “avoid the danger” posed by the hard-left party La France Insoumise.
This is the first time in French history that The Republicans has aligned itself with the hard-right party RN at a national level, prompting strong criticism and rejection from Republicans bigwigs.
c) In the European Parliament elections in the Czech Republic, pro-European parties lost, while parties relying on national identity won. This means that the political discourse will focus on “national interests” and “our people,” writes Seznam Zprávy commentator Jan Lipold.
The election results hit Petr Fiala’s government hard. The SPOLU coalition lost 5% of its support (from 27% to 22%) compared to the 2021 elections, and STAN and the Pirates decreased from 16% to 15%. Voter turnout was only 36%, which negatively impacted the ruling parties, as wealthier and more liberal voters, who tend to prefer parties to the right of centre, usually have higher turnout in EU elections.
The election results also cast doubt on the ruling parties’ success in the 2025 general elections and this autumn’s regional elections. Pro-European parties’ defeat creates an unfavourable situation for Ukraine, as the new political discourse in the Czech Republic will focus even more on national interests.
d) The Eurosceptic Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) has topped the country’s European Elections after it ran under the slogan “Stop the EU Madness”.
FPÖ managed to garner 27 per cent of the vote with the campaign, with the win seeing it double the number of MEPs in Brussels.
It is the first time the party has topped an Austrian election, with the June 9 vote overtaking the People’s Party (ÖVP) and giving the FPÖ’s leader Herbert Kickl hopes of a big win in the country’s general elections in September.

France’s largest unions, the CFDT, CGT, UNSA, FSU and Solidaires have called for demonstrations this weekend, in response to gains made by the far-right in the European elections and the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Following a large defeat for his party in the European elections and historic wins for the far-right – with Rassemblement National (RN) gaining over a third of the vote – French President Emmanuel Macron made the unexpected decision to dissolve parliament and call for snap elections.
In response, unions published a shared statement calling “for people to demonstrate as widely as possible” this weekend and ahead of the vote (scheduled for June 30th and July 7th)….”
